A Never Seen Before Exhibition, A New Relationship and New Opportunities
The Crow Collection of Asian Art Welcomes 2007
Tuesday, February 06, 2007

DALLAS, Feb. 6, 2007 — "Female Buddhas: Women of Enlightenment in Himalayan Art" inaugurates RMA in Dallas, the new partnership between the Rubin Museum of Art in New York and The Crow Collection of Asian Art. Running from February 9 through August 26, 2007, the exhibition is the study of the female Buddha and her representation in Tibetan artwork – it is the first exhibition with this thematic focus in the United States.

With objects dating from the thirteenth through the nineteenth century, the exhibition includes sculptures and colorful paintings of fully realized women of power, compassion, and omniscience, including Tara, the most popular female Buddha in Tibet. Compelling feminine expressions are represented through vibrant color, fluid line, and rich symbolism, the distinguishing qualities of Himalayan art. Feminine qualities are rarely studied or celebrated in Eastern religions making this exhibition distinctive and important. The female deity is largely unexamined throughout Asia, making Tibet one of the only regions that recognizes the female perspective in their study of divinity.

The Rubin Museum is a cultural and educational institution dedicated to the art of the Himalayas and is home to a comprehensive collection focusing on the region. The artistic heritage of the vast and culturally varied area remains relatively obscure. But through rotating exhibitions and an array of programming, the Rubin Museum aims to explore the legacy of the Himalayan region.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for our museum. We have found a wonderful friend and partner in our efforts to bring understanding and exposure of distant cultures. I could not be more pleased with our new relationship," said Trammell S. Crow," President of the Crow Family Foundation.

The Crow Collection of Asian Art and The Rubin Museum are united in their commitment to education and awareness to the Eastern world. The two institutions are similar in size and scope and the partnership will allow for the exchange of exhibitions and resources. Female Buddhas: Women of Enlightenment in Himalayan Art is the first of seven exhibits to be received by The Crow Collection.

"The Rubin believes that art is to be seen, interpreted, shared and understood; this new partnership with The Crow Collection offers another opportunity for us to accomplish this objective. We are sharing our collections and audiences and the sheer increase in exposure is exactly in keeping with our museum’s highest calling," remarked Donald Rubin, co-founder, Rubin Museum of Art.

The Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art contains more than 600 paintings, objects of metal and stone, and large architectural pieces from China, Japan, India, and Southeast Asia. Over 300 works are on display in the galleries including precious jade ornaments from China, delicate Japanese scrolls and a rarely seen 28-foot by 12-foot sandstone facade of an 18th century Indian residence.
