Arts of China

The Crow Collection of Asian Art focuses primarily on works from China's last empire, the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The largest, richest, and most populous empire of its time, arts flourished under imperial patronage. In addition to a large collection of carved Qing dynasty jade, the collection features paintings, sculpture, porcelain, and decorative and ritual items in lacquer, ivory, rhinoceros horn, rock crystal, and glass.

Jade

Jade has been in continuous use in China for nearly 7,000 years. It is one of the most treasured and admired materials in Chinese culture, and discussed in philosophical texts as a way to describe the qualities of the ideal person. During the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), jade artistry reached its highest level of refinement. The Crow Collection includes jades ranging in six and importance from small hairpins to massive throne screens.

Japan

The first floor of the Crow Collection is devoted to the art of Japan. Displayed in these galleries are Japanese scrolls and screens representing some of the major painting styles of Japan as well as objects in rock crystal, lacquer, ceramics, and bronze. Regular changing exhibitions of Japanese art provide visitors with an opportunity to experience a wide variety of spectacular works created over the centuries..

IndiaSEAsia

India is the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Gallery III features religious sculptures and rotating exhibitions have included such works as a monumental stone head of a bodhisattva demonstrating the Greco-Roman influence on Buddhist sculpture. Hindu sculptures include representations of popular deities such as Vishnu, Shiva, and Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva, who is revered as the Remover of Obstacles.
