The Dallas Arts District is a 17-block, 61.7-acre neighborhood in the northeast part of downtown Dallas that was inaugurated in 1984. Already home to some of Dallas’ most storied buildings, the Arts District welcomed the new facilities established for the Dallas Museum of Art and the Dallas Symphony in the late eighties/early nineties. Those edifices have in fact become the anchors for a blossoming, architecturally distinctive community destination that is still growing. The funds generated at the inaugural gala helped form the Arts District Foundation, an organization still funding activity and events in the District. The Arts District Friends was founded as a non-profit organization in 1984 at the same time as the Foundation. The Friends was to be the organization charged with increasing awareness of this new and vibrant downtown neighborhood and in essence, to market it. That premise continues today as the Friends work to fulfill their mission: To Champion the Dallas Arts District and to Enliven and Promote the District as a Place for People.
The vision for the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts transcends a mere accumulation of remarkable buildings. It calls for a unified community of venues, linked by both proximity and philosophy, expressing a common commitment to excellence.
When the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts opens, it will be among the finest performing arts centers in the world. Two of the world's foremost architectural firms are in the process of creating designs that will establish the Center as the "cultural signature" of Dallas and the region. The Center's theaters will feature state-of-the-art facilities providing new production space for local arts organizations and will attract to Dallas the world's most renowned performing artists. A series of inviting indoor and outdoor spaces will create a civic gathering place for citizens and visitors seeking entertainment and cultural experiences in a vibrant urban setting.
