Japanese Garden, Gallery I
The Bamboo and Maple Garden (take to momiji no niwa) at the Trammell & Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art embodies one of the fundamental ideas of 16th century tea ceremony master Sen no Rikyu which was to create "a mountain of life in the city". During this time, the Momoyama period, the creation of small courtyard gardens in the merchant style town homes called machiya was also evolving. This garden strives to bring the spirit of the countryside into the city, and offer city dwellers a refreshing escape from their daily life. The large tachigata (pedestal lantern) is patterned after lanterns first seen at the Kasuga Shrine in Nara, Japan and is part of the Crow's permanent collection. Shinto motifs are carved into the sides of the light box. The tsukubai arrangement is a vital part of the tea garden, and is the site for the ritual purification of guests where they wash away the cares of the outside world before entering the tea house. |
