Culture to Culture:  Reconciling Asian and European art
Three Thursdays – October 22, 29 and November 5

As humanity has moved back and forth across the globe, it has often incorporated foreign elements into local aesthetics. While it is often said that there is nothing new under the sun, the reality is that the way it is packaged is always different. This three-part series will examine the cross pollination of ideas across continents.

Nancy Cohen Israel is an art historian with over 15 years of teaching experience. For over 10 years, she has organized and led the popular Dallas art tour series, Second Saturdays, with visits to artists’ studios, private collections and unique art spaces locally, regionally and internationally.

Thursday, October 22
“Found in Translation”
As early as Alexander the Great’s conquest of Asia Minor in the 4th century BCE, a flow of ideas created a current between East and West that is reflected in the art of both. Early Indian Buddhas, for example, bear the handwriting of the Classical West. As trade and exploration continued throughout history, foreign aesthetics inspired local artists in both Asian as well as European courts. In this program, we will examine the millennia-long cross-pollination that continues today.

FREE. Reservations required. Call 214-979-6438 or visit www.crowcollection.org to register.
